How it Works

From label capture to personalised ingredient insights.

Avessia helps you scan a product's ingredients label, convert it into readable text, match those ingredients against our database, and apply your personal concern settings to produce a practical product assessment.

The goal is to make ingredient information easier to access and easier to understand, without asking you to do the research manually.

1

Start with the source

Capture the label panel

Start by scanning the product's ingredients label using your phone camera.

Avessia is designed to detect ingredient panels headed by terms such as INGREDIENTS or CONTAINS. For the best result, the full ingredients section should be visible, with clear lighting, minimal glare, and a steady image.

2

From image to text

Convert the photo with OCR

Once captured, the label image is processed using state-of-the-art optical character recognition (OCR) software running on our host systems.

This converts the photographed label into machine-readable ingredient text, including many labels that are curved, densely printed, or difficult to read by eye.

3

Ingredient recognition

Match against ingredient records

The extracted ingredient list is then matched against Avessia's database of more than 23,000 personal care ingredients.

At this stage, recognised ingredients are identified and linked to the underlying hazard and evidence records used in the assessment process.

4

Relevant to you

Apply your concern settings

Not every ingredient concern matters equally to every person. Avessia applies your selected concern settings to produce a more personalised result.

This generates:

  • a personalised product safety score
  • an overall product rating such as Avoid, Discretion Advised, or Better Choice
5

Review and compare

Explore the result and save products

After the scan, you can explore individual ingredient summaries to better understand why a product received its result.

Where available, ingredient summaries include scientific references to support further research. You can also save products to My Shelf for future reference and comparison.

Why Avessia?

Why labels, not barcodes?

Avessia is built around the ingredients label itself, because that is where the formulation information lives.
